Manual or Electric?
Ice cream makers come in two varieties, first is the manual kind, which is simply a bowl with a smaller inner bowl outfitted with a hand-operated stirring mechanism called a dasher. To make Ice cream, the outer bowl uses freezing point depression through a freezing mixture of salt and ice, with the salt melting the ice causing the heat fusion to absorb all of the heat from the ingredients in the inner bowl, thereby freezing it. These types of ice cream makers are referred to as “manual” because they do not involve electricity, and the dasher needs to be cranked by hand.For people who are willing to spend money, there are also electric ice cream makers that have an electric motor that can drive either the paddle or the bowl in order to stir the mixture automatically. Electric ice cream makers also differ in the way cooling of the ice cream mixture is performed. These electric ice cream makers come with built-in freezing mechanisms that act as small freezers that cool the ingredients without the need for the bowl to be pre-chilled. Some of the more expensive models even have automated systems that turn on the paddles after a certain amount of time, in order to prevent large ice crystals from forming.
The choice between electric and manual ice cream maker is up to the buyer, with the main argument between the two being their price and their ease of use. Electric ones are far easier to use, but is significantly more expensive, especially if you count the costs involving electric consumption. Manual makers on the other hand are cheap, but can be tedious and messy. No matter which one is chosen, it still remains true that making your own ice cream is an enjoyable endeavor, since not only will you be able to choose your own flavor, but you will also be able to choose your own ingredients.
